If you're thinking of implementing the Microsoft SharePoint platform for your business, you must consider the operating systems and browsers that are compatible with the SharePoint environment. Other computers on your network and collaborative systems may use a Mac without the SharePoint software installed. Luckily, you can work with the SharePoint platform across operating systems by using a web browser for access.
Why Use SharePoint
SharePoint is designed specifically to function with Microsoft Office. The purpose of SharePoint has changed drastically since it was first introduced in 2001. The platform originally served as a means of creating and managing websites, but it has since turned into more of an internal content management system.
A company can use SharePoint to share documents and media files, with the power to edit and collaborate in a team environment. This makes the platform very convenient for businesses that pass information between one or more individuals on a regular basis.
Although SharePoint as a software service is setup to run in the PC environment, it has a cloud-based service that makes cross-platform use easy to execute. The ability to use it on PC and iOS systems empowers the business to use SharePoint while knowing all parties can access the information through a simple web browser. The only limitation becomes offline use for Mac specific users or any device solely relying on the cloud-based access.

Managing Functions on a Mac
You can add SharePoint media files while working on a Mac, if your access credentials permit the action. You can also administer a SharePoint site collection and individual SharePoint sites on a Mac, as long as you have been assigned the credentials or control the system as an administrator.
In fact, you can administer the entire SharePoint platform on a Mac because SharePoint Central Administration is fully operational in both the Safari and Firefox Web browsers. All features, with the exception of those that are dependent on Microsoft protocols, are available when accessing a SharePoint site from Safari or Firefox.
The Multiple File Upload feature is not available through the SharePoint platform when working on a Mac. However, the Microsoft Document Connection is integrated with Office 2011 for Mac. Simply install the application from the Office installation media for a more robust file upload process. Microsoft Document Connection enables you to upload multiple files to the SharePoint platform on a Mac.
Limitations on Mac Systems
Some SharePoint features are only available when using the Internet Explorer browser. These features include connecting to Outlook, Excel Services and creating workspaces from the Outlook client. Additionally, the Explorer View is not available when using SharePoint on a Mac.
Integrated Microsoft Office features, such as InfoPath and OneNote, are not available when working with SharePoint on a Mac because these features are not available in the Mac version of Office. These features operate using ActiveX technology, which is not supported on the Mac.
